Después de la propuesta de un paseo por la costa vasca, os
queremos animar a conocer la montaña de nuestro pequeño país y a conquistar una de sus cimas más altas, Gorbea (1,481 m) que se encuentra en el Parque Natural de 20.000 ha de extensión y que es la más alta de Vizcaya y
de Álava (dos provincias vascas) simultáneamente. En la cima el visitante puede
encontrarse con una enorme cruz de 18 metros de altura que cada año acoge a
miles de aficionados al senderismo y de la montaña.
El macizo de Gorbea tiene un significado especial ya que
forma parte de uno de los cinco montes bocineros, desde donde mediante cornetas
y hogueras se enviaban mensajes al pueblo.
Queremos proponeros una de las varias rutas para subir el
Gorbea. La excursión no es muy difícil, se puede hacer en un día o dos
pernoctando en un refugio gratuito donde el fuego de la chimenea es una grata
sorpresa después de la caminata.
El recorrido empieza desde Zeanuri, un pequeño pueblo
ubicado en los confines del Parque y para llegar hasta allí se puede coger el
autobús público (Bizkaibus) desde Bilbao (Abando) que sale a las 9 de la
mañana. Si disponemos del coche, hay que acceder al parque por la A68
Bilbao-Vitoria por el puerto de Altube y la N-240 Bilbao – Vitoria por Barazar
(en Zeanuri hay un parking donde se puede aparcar el vehículo). Empezamos la
subida en Zeanuri a Zanburu (5,5km; desnivel
587m. Hay fuente en San Justo). El tiempo aproximado de este tramo es de 2,5 horas. De Zanburu vamos a la cima del Gorbeia por la pista que va desde
Pagomakurre (6,6km, desnivel 700 m. Hay fuentes en Egiriñao). Son unas 4 horas. De la cima bajamos al refugio: 5,4km (1,5 horas). El refugio está junto al río Baia/Bayas. Deberíamos llegar al refugio sobre las 18:15.
El refugio está muy bien
equipado, tiene una litera, mesa, sillas,
chimenea, y mucho espacio en el suelo para poner las esterillas y los sacos de
dormir.
Al día siguiente, subimos por Usotegieta (o también podemos bordearlo),
hacia Itxina (unos 5 km, 1,5 h aprox.) para visitar la cueva de Supelegor, y
tambien el Ojo de Atxulaur, y pasear un poco por Itxina (el recorrido circular,
entre ida y vuelta 10 km y 4,5 horas). En el collado de
Arlobi se puede ver un menhir.
Bajamos a Orozko, al barrio de Ibarra, donde hay Bizkaibus.
También se puede subir el Gorbea en un día acortando un poco
el recorrido. Para llegar a Zeanuri desde Urune tenemos que dirigirnos a
Amorebieta, después a Lemoa y Areatza y tardamos más o menos entre 30 y 40 min. Toda esta información ha sido comprobada por mí en persona un
fin de semana del noviembre. Es una magnifica excursión para realizar en
cualquier época del año, especialmente en otoño cuando los montes se tiñen de
tonos rojizos, naranjos y amarillos de los abundantes hayas esparcidos por toda
la zona. Si el viajero tiene coche, recomiendo parar en una pastelería en un
pequeño pueblo llamado Murguia para dar un toque final a la aventura con el pastel
vasco y chocolate caliente.

A walk in the clouds of Gorbea
After our last proposal of a tour of the Basque coast,
this time we would like encourage to explore the mountains of our small country
and conquer Gorbea, one of its highest peaks (1,481 m) located in the Gorbea Natural
Park (20,000 hectares) and its summit Gorbea, the highest of Biscay and Álava
(two Basque provinces) simultaneously. At the top, there is a huge cross, 18
meter high visited each year by thousands of hikers and mountain lovers.
The Gorbea massif a has special meaning being a part
of one of the five mountains from where messages used to be sent by means of
horns and bonfires.
In this article, we would like you to become familiar
with one of the several routes to climb Gorbea peak. The excursion does not
require being extremely fit and is highly recommendable to anyone who likes
long strolls and nature. It can be performed in a days or two staying overnight
in a free shelter where the chimney fire is a pleasant surprise after a
day-long walk.
Our itinerary starts in Zeanuri, a small town located
on the edge of the park. You can take the public bus (Bizkaibus) from Bilbao
(Abando) departing at 9 am. If you have a car, you have to access the park from
the motorway A-68 Bilbao-Vitoria via Altube mountain port and the national road
N-240 Bilbao - Vitoria via Barazar (in Zeanuri there is a parking lot to leave your
vehicle safe and sound). We start our little adventure climbing Zanburu (5.5 km; slope 587m. There is a
drinking water fountain in San Justo). The approximate time of this stretch is
2.5 hours. From Zanburu we go to the top of Gorbeia taking a track that leads
to Pagomakurre (6.6 km, 700 m altitude. Another drinking water source in
Egiriñao ). It takes about 4 hours. From the summit we descend to the shelter:
5.4 km (1.5 hours). The shelter is near the River Baia / Bayas. We should reach
the shelter at about 18:15 pm. The shelter is well equipped, it has a bunk bed,
table, chairs, fireplace and plenty of space on the floor to put the mats and
sleeping bags. The next day we climb up to Usotegieta (or we can just skirt it),
up to Itxina (about 5 km, 1.5 h approx.) to visit the cave of Supelegor and Ojo
de Atxulaur, and go around Itxina (a circular path, round trip 10 km and 4.5
hours). On the hill of Arlobi there is a menhir, another curiosity to see apart
from the above mentioned caves.
Afterwards, we go down to Orozko, a neighborhood of
Ibarra, where we can take Bizkaibus to go back to Bilbao.
You can also climb Gorbea in one day Gorbea picking up
a slightly shorter route. To reach Zeanuri from Urune we need to go to
Amorebieta, then Lemoa and Areatza which takes from 30 to 40 min.
All this information has been checked by me in person
at a weekend of November. It is a wonderful trip for any time of the year,
especially in autumn when the mountains are painted in red, orange and yellows
decorated by magnificent beeches scattered throughout the area. If the traveler
has a car, I recommend stopping at a bakery in a small town called Murguia to enjoy
a piece of an exquisite Basque cake and a cup of hot chocolate.
